The sheiling was re-built in 2006 in the traditional Western Isles style but using modern building methods. It has timber frame inner walls with thick outer stone walls.
All of the stone were collected from the island itself and also incorporates stones used in the construction of the original sheiling. Its overall size is approximately 8m x 5m, divided internally into two rooms (living area and wash/toilet area).
Internally the sheiling has been imaginatively designed to create two comfortably sized living areas.
Island Life
Lingay Island is approximately 60 acres in size and the sheiling is the only building on the island. It helps to have an adventurous spirit, be physically fit and have the ability to live under basic conditions, as well as being content with your own company! It is necessary to bring everything that is needed for any stay , e.g. food, bedding, clothing, etc.
Facilities are basic with no mod cons! There is no electricity (only lantern and torch light etc.), no running water (water collection from nearby wells), heating and cooking using gas, and a compost toilet that will need to be regularly emptied!
